De Hoop: een Nomadische Tuin
Leuven, Belgium | May – September 2022 | June – October 2023

With its roots in the social housing complex of Sint-Maartensdal, this project grew and flourished across the entire city of Leuven, Belgium. In an attempt to make fries with mayonnaise from scratch, we handed sunflowers and potatoes to residents and local organisations, while taking on the harvesting of mustard, onions, eggs, and salt ourselves. Together, a nomadic garden was formed, and the iconic Belgian dish was served…Or was it?
This project is about food production, slowness, supply chains, hope, and failure.
During this time, we also organised workshops, an interactive exhibition, and a symposium exploring art, ecology, and agriculture.

In 2023, we created a short film that reflected on the project while exploring the possibilities and limitations of participatory, socially engaged practice.

This project was created in collaboration with Katinka De Jonge, Laurens Mariën and Marie Malingreau. Produced by Werktank and with support from Cas-co, Buurtcentrum Sint-Maartensdal, STUK and all the hopers.
